Role Description
The Finance Manager is a hands‑on financial leader responsible for planning and overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for a cross‑border services company. This role requires a working controller who is comfortable evaluating the financial operations of the business, preparing journal entries, reviewing reconciliations, and closing the books, while also partnering with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. The ideal candidate thrives in a lean environment, brings strong Canada–U.S. accounting expertise, and can balance accuracy, speed, and continuous process improvement.
Job Duties
Accounting and Financial Close
- Organize and manage the month‑end and year‑end close processes including consolidation across multiple entities
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
- Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with ASPE / U.S. GAAP (as applicable)
- Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting policies
- Prepare, coordinate and manage all financial, managerial and operational reporting activities including: Monthly/quarterly/annual financial statements, managerial reports, and Board reports
Cross‑Border & Compliance
- Execute all Canadian and U.S. tax and worker’s compensation calculations, filings, and payments, including HST, GST, QST, PST, and U.S. sales tax (where applicable); payroll taxes; and WSIB, WorkSafe BC, WorkSafe NB, and CNESST
- Oversee intercompany transactions and FX considerations
- Manage risk elements including safeguarding assets, insurance, and external audits
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Analysis
- Lead and coordinate the annual budget process and monthly reforecasts
- Prepare variance analysis
Cash Flow & Working Capital
- Monitor and forecast cash flow
- Manage working capital including A/R and A/P processes, collections, and payment runs
- Monitor all banking activities and develop a strong relationship with the organization’s bank
Systems, Controls, and Process Improvement
- Maintain and improve internal controls
- Optimize accounting processes in a low‑headcount, capital‑constrained environment
- Execute all payroll functions
- Act as system owner for accounting/ERP, HRIS, and related tools
- Implement process improvements to enhance financial reporting timeliness, accuracy, efficiency and scalability
- Manage and lead a small accounting team
- Train and mentor the Accounting, A/R, and A/P teams and set employee developmental goals that align with corporate‑level goals
Skills Requirements (Qualifications)
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related business degree
- An active CPA license is required (from CPA Ontario or other equivalent Canadian provincial regulatory body)
- At least five (5) years of experience as a Controller or Finance Manager overseeing the Accounting function
- At least three (3) years of public accounting experience
- Private equity experience and strong working knowledge of ASPE standards
- Previous experience reporting directly to executive team (CFO/CEO)
- Previous experience leading the year‑end audit
- Previous experience with mergers and acquisitions, including overseeing the accounting due diligence and integration
- Previous experience working with Sage Intacct and Sage 300
- Previous experience leading ERP implementation
- Previous experience with project costing
- Strong proficiency in Excel including building and maintaining an integrated financial model, to be assessed through a live test as part of the interview process
Terms of Employment: Full‑Time (40 hours/week), Permanent
Language of Work: English. The Finance Manager must be able to read, write and speak English.
