### Position Summary

**Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU )** invites applicationsfor the position of **Professional Academic Advisor and StudentSuccess Coach ( ASC )** . This position serves as a criticalmember of the Division of Student Success, providing holisticacademic advising and success coaching designed to promote studentpersistence, retention, belonging, and timely degreecompletion.

The successful candidate will serve as a **student successpartner**, guiding students through their collegiate journey byproviding individualized support, helping students navigateinstitutional systems, strengthening academic skills, andconnecting students with resources that foster personal growth andachievement.

This role is ideal for a collaborative, student-centeredprofessional who believes advising is more than course selection,it is an opportunity to inspire confidence, develop student agency,and help students realize their full potential.

### Key Responsibilities of the Professional Academic Advisor andStudent Success Counselor:

### Academic Advising and Success Coaching

- Manage an assigned caseload of prospective, first-year, andsecond-year students, providing continuous advising support throughkey academic transitions.

- Deliver individualized and group advising focused on courseselection, general education requirements, major/minor exploration,and long-term academic and career planning.

- Conduct strengths-based academic coaching sessions that supportgoal setting, time management, academic skill development, andself-advocacy.

- Interpret and communicate university policies, procedures, andacademic requirements related to enrollment, progression, andgraduation.

- Audit student academic records, evaluate degree progress,review transcripts, and advise students on appropriate academicactions.

- Monitor student registration, academic performance, andprogression to identify barriers to success and facilitateproactive intervention program with tier leadership.

- Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential advisingdocumentation in institutional systems.

### Retention, Persistence, and Wraparound Support

- Serve as a primary point of connection for students bycoordinating referrals to tutoring, counseling, career development,financial literacy, wellness, and other campus or communityresources.

- Monitor retention, persistence, and graduation trends withinthe assigned caseload and provide targeted outreach to students inneed of additional support.

- Coordinate and deliver timely communications related to coursescheduling, academic deadlines, core requirements, and studentsuccess initiatives.

- Support students participating in academic recovery,readmission, or academic improvement programs by providingstructured advising and retention services.

### Data, Systems, and Continuous Improvement

- Utilize student success platforms, early alert systems, andpredictive analytics to identify at-risk students and facilitateinterventions with Tier leadership.

- Perform accurate data entry and maintenance of student successmetrics and advising records.

- Analyze advising and student success data to inform outreachstrategies, program enhancements, and communication efforts.

- Assist with the preparation of reports related to enrollment,retention, progression, and student outcomes.

### Professional Development and Institutional Collaboration

- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current onadvising theory, student success practices, and NACADAstandards.

- Collaborate with university partners to promote coordinated,holistic student support.

- Participate in first-year and second year experienceinitiatives, student success programs, and institutional retentionefforts.

- Model a culture of care, accountability, collaboration, andstudent-centered service.

### Evaluation Metrics

- Effective caseload management and accuracy of advisingdocumentation.

- Responsiveness to student inquiries and follow-upcommunication.

- Retention, persistence, and progression outcomes within theassigned caseload.

- Improvements in student academic performance (e.g., GPA, creditcompletion).

- Student satisfaction related to advisor accessibility, care,and effectiveness.

- Demonstrated growth in student decision-making, self-efficacy,and navigation of institutional systems.

**Minimum Qualifications**

- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combinationof education and experience.

- Minimum of two years of experience in academic advising,student success coaching, or a related student support role.

**Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training,Education**

**Preferred Qualifications**

- Prior knowledge and engagement with NACADA .

- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communicationskills.

- Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail andconfidentiality.

- Proficiency with student information systems and advisingtechnologies.

- Understanding of early alert, CRM, or retention platforms(e.g., EAB Navigate, Starfish, Anthology).
