About the Job Protection & Control Technician - Substation (Northern VA) Location: Lincoln Park & Woodbridge, VA Position Type: 6-Month Contract with possibility of extension Schedule: Full-Time Work Environment: Primarily Field-Based / Outdoor About the Opportunity: ASAP is hiring on behalf of our client for an Entry-Level Protection & Control Technician to support substation operations and maintenance activities in Northern Virginia. This role is part of a structured development program designed to build foundational knowledge in system protection, protective relaying, and substation operations within a utility environment. This is a hands-on, field-based opportunity ideal for candidates with a technical electrical background who are looking to grow their career in the power and utility industry.
Key Responsibilities: Assist with installation and commissioning of protection and control equipment. Support testing and verification of protective relays and associated systems. Participate in acceptance testing of voltage and current sensing devices.
Inspect, clean, and maintain protective relays and substation components. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance activities. Read and interpret control drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
Use handheld multimeters and diagnostic tools. Verify relay settings and logic configurations under supervision. Complete required compliance documentation and maintenance records.
Follow electrical clearance/tagout procedures and safety protocols. Participate in pre-job safety briefings and hazard assessments. Coordinate with project stakeholders during construction and maintenance activities.
Required Qualifications: Associate's degree (or advanced technical diploma) in: Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology. Electronics Technology. Instrumentation Technology.
Electromechanical Technology. Mechatronics. Mechanical Engineering Technology.
Or comparable technical field Minimum 5 years of U.S. military experience including at least one year of formal technical training in: Electrical theory. AC/DC circuits. Ohm's Law.
Fault isolation. Multimeter applications. Preferred Knowledge & Skills: Basic understanding of substation equipment and protection systems.
Exposure to electro-mechanical or microprocessor-based relays. Familiarity with SCADA or communication systems. Ability to read and interpret schematics and logic diagrams.
Strong organizational and documentation skills. Good verbal and written communication. Self-motivated with strong safety awareness.
Physical & Working Conditions: Primarily outdoor field environment. Exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, inclement weather). Operating machinery and working around energized equipment.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must reside within approximately one hour of the work location due to potential call-out requirements. Steel-toe boots required.
