Job description & requirements

We are extensively growing our Global Art Team

As a Lead 3D Animator in 1518, you will work closely with the team to create skilled animation with strong acting, story-driven performances, and convincing motion that will bring our worlds and characters to life.

1518 Studios is seeking a talented Lead Animator to join our global Art Team. You will work on a variety of games, producing high-quality animations ranging from stylized to realistic, across cinematic sequences and real-time motion. Whether animating heroes, monsters, crowds, or objects, you will focus on movement's intention and subject behavior, understanding how details contribute to the overall in-game experience. A strong sense of 3D design, facial animation, and body mechanics (both realistic and cartoony) is essential, and a compelling reel demonstrating these skills is required.

This role offers significant responsibility and opportunities to develop your artistic, technical, and creative skills. We welcome applications from 2D and 3D Artists capable of working across various art styles.

We prefer candidates with 5+ years of experience in the games industry, but talented, self-taught individuals or those from different creative backgrounds with a strong portfolio are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • BA in Art Media, graphic design, or relevant experience (e.g., fine arts, computer animation, illustration, digital arts, media arts, or MFA in animation or VFX).
  • Experience with AAA, indie, PC, mobile games, or NFT projects, or a passion for gaming and industry knowledge.
  • Understanding of creative briefs, considering context, timelines, and constraints.
  • Ability to inject narrative and life into characters, props, and effects.
  • Excellent time management and multitasking skills.
  • Creative problem-solving skills balancing aesthetics, function, and flow.
  • Solid grasp of realistic and cartoon human/creature poses and keyframe animation.
  • Proficiency in facial expressions and blendshape animations.
  • Ability to generate and iterate multiple creative options.
  • Knowledge of 3D animation techniques, motion design, camera movement, and working with Maya and motion capture data.
  • Experience with animation mockups and asset pipeline planning.
  • Collaborative attitude, receptive to feedback, and team-oriented.
  • Experience optimizing assets for in-game performance across departments.
  • Proficiency in software tools like Maya, After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Animate CC.
  • Drawing skills across styles, with knowledge of lighting, perspective, materials, and cinematic lighting/shading.
  • Understanding of rigging processes and relevant technical software.
  • Supportive, ownership-driven attitude, eager to mentor others.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with locomotion animation.
  • Proficiency with Unity or other game engines, including importing/exporting and troubleshooting.
  • 2D animation skills for characters, objects, and effects.
