Job Mission
The Technical Design Engineer works within the design team creating and managing custom tools and design templates. Acting as a industry expert providing creative solutions aimed at improving production quality and efficiency. Technical Design Engineers ensure repetitive tasks are automated, technical information is stored, accurate and available, work flows are designed in a way to enable efficient transfer of data between cross functional teams in the business.
The Technical Design Engineer works in cross functional teams that include CAD Engineers, Design Engineers, Regional Design Engineers, Project Managers, and Application Engineers. Technical Design Engineers will conduct internal and external stake holder meetings to review scope of development of new tools and processes. The goal is a comprehensive set of security design tools that support the development of complex security project scopes.
Responsibilities
- Research and develop best practice CAD engineering tools, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational efficiency
- Lead the development of tools to provide cross functional operational efficiencies within Northland processes reporting on project progress and measured successes
- Create, maintain and manage client design tools and template drawing files
- Create and deliver internal training, supported by technical documentation
- Manage onboarding of new clients working with the PMO and client lead, ensuring all customer standards, BOM and templates are available
- Manage quality of design tools and templates which include sheet templates, BOM's, Dynamic Blocks, Camera Field of Views, single line diagrams, elevations, and device connection details ensuring they are delivered to both client security standards and Northland Controls design standards
- Provide clear, concise written and verbal communications in a timely manner at all stages of a project to all stakeholders
- Accurately allocate time spent to live projects for work completed through time sheets
Qualifications
- Experienced in the advanced use of AutoCAD 2018 through to the current release creating custom tools using lisp routines, macros, python, C+, C++ coding
- Experienced in the advanced use of Revit 2023 through to the current release working within the BIM360 environment
- Experienced in developing and delivering new design engineering tools and processes
- Extensive experience in the design of low voltage systems: physical security systems, life safety, network infrastructure, or related disciplines
- Extensive design and coordination experience working in cross functional teams with designers, project managers and application engineers.

Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor of science in electrical or electronic engineering or design management or equivalent industry experience
- Minimum five years working for a Security Integrator or Security Design Consultant with at least 2 years' experience in a similar role
- Advanced knowledge of Autodesk products, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft 360, SharePoint, Smartsheet, NetSuite, SAP
- Product knowledge including but not limited to Lenel S2, C-Cure, Mercury Hardware, HID Products, Genetec, Milestone, Avigilon, AXIS Products, Assa Abloy, Allegion and Schlage Electronic Locking Hardware, Altronix and Life Safety Power Supplies is desirable
- Working knowledge of relevant ISO standards for CAD including ISO128, ISO13567 and ISO 10303
