The opportunity we have available
The Payroll Services team, within the Workplace Relations and Payroll section, is looking for several Senior Payroll Officers at the APS 5 level. Our team provides assistance to employees with their pay, conditions of service and salary queries which includes salary progression, salary packaging, payment of allowances, applying and processing all leave types, and work related expenses. The team is friendly, cohesive and process focussed, working to fortnightly deadlines.
What will you do?
Reporting to the Payroll Manager under limited direction, you will:
- Administer leave and payroll processing of employee benefits in SAP (SAP ECC6). Your role includes the provision of advice on conditions of service, assisting with determining team priorities, staffing and workflow, to meet deadlines and working within a small team to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Provide advice to employees, at all levels, on issues regarding the interpretation of relevant legislation and other APS employment frameworks, including the Public Service Act 1999 and the Department’s Enterprise Agreement.
- Provide quality assurance ensuring that payroll processing is correct.
- Work on ad-hoc projects and systems improvements as they arise.
Who are we looking for?
The successful candidate for this position will be able to demonstrate their capability against the APS 5 Work level standards.
We are seeking people who have a strong attention to detail and are willing to explore diverse and innovative ways of thinking. People who work for us need to be team oriented, outcomes focussed, curious to suggest improvements and have an ability to think outside the box to get results. Specific requirements for the role are:
- Experience working in a team performing payroll related tasks.
- Demonstrated payroll experience and a good working knowledge of legislation and employment conditions relevant to the Australian Public Service or the ability to gain such knowledge quickly.
- Experience in, or the ability to quickly learn SAP (SAP ECC6).
- Experience in preparing correspondence and reports (including emails and letters) on routine matters.
Cultural capability requirement
The department believes every role contributes to cultural safety and that building staff cultural capability helps us deliver better policies, programs and services for First Nations people and the broader Australian community. Candidates will be required to demonstrate their willingness to develop their cultural capability as part of the assessment process. In making it a requirement across all roles in our department, we are taking a practical step in delivering our commitments under the Our Stories on Country Agreement and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy 2025–28.
As an APS5 you will be expected to:
- Consider the cultural context and implications of work area outcomes.
- Engage respectfully with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, building trusted relationships.
- Communicate respectfully and seek appropriate cultural input to inform decisions.
RecruitAbility minimum requirements
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is committed to supporting the employment and career development of people with disability. Our participation in APS RecruitAbility means we will progress an applicant with disability to a further stage in the recruitment process, where they opt into RecruitAbility and meet the minimum requirements for the vacancy.
You will be asked to indicate if you wish to opt into RecruitAbility in the application form. You must tick the 'opt in' box to participate in RecruitAbility. Simply declaring that you have a disability will not automatically include you.
We provide reasonable adjustments such as access, equipment or other practical support at relevant stages of the recruitment process. Please advise in the application form or the contact officer if you need any adjustments made.
The minimum requirements for this role include:
- Attention to detail and the ability to problem solve.
