Job Description
The Field Service Technician I - Floater (FST) is an entry-level role responsible for supporting installation, maintenance, and repair of TARGAN systems under the guidance of senior technicians and Regional Service Managers. This role focuses on developing foundational technical skills, learning standard service procedures, and building the ability to troubleshoot and support equipment in the field. The FST is expected to actively learn, follow established processes, and progressively develop the skills required to become an independent Field Service Technician.
This role will be serve as a Floater, not assigned to one specific site, but rather rotating through different sites as needed.
Key Job Responsibilities
Technical Support & Learning
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and repair of TARGAN systems.
- Support Senior and Intermediate FSTs during service visits.
- Learn and follow standard troubleshooting procedures.
- Develop understanding of mechanical, electrical, and system operations.
Preventive Maintenance Support
- Assist in performing preventive maintenance tasks.
- Learn how to identify basic wear and system issues.
- Follow PM checklists and procedures as directed.
Service Execution
- Support service activities to ensure machines are operating correctly.
- Perform basic troubleshooting tasks with guidance.
- Escalate issues appropriately when beyond current skill level.
Customer Interaction
- Maintain a professional and respectful presence at customer sites.
- Observe and learn effective customer communication from senior team members.
SRO Documentation
- Assist in completing Service Request Orders (SROs).
- Learn proper documentation standards and expectations.
- Ensure accurate recording of work performed when assigned.
- Work closely with Senior and Intermediate technicians to build skills.
- Participate in all assigned training programs.
- Demonstrate continuous improvement and willingness to learn.
Operational Responsibilities
- Maintain tools and equipment.
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
- Participate in travel and support schedules as required.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude
- Willingness to learn and develop technical skills
- Strong work ethic and reliability
- Ability to follow instructions and processes
- Basic computer skills
- Associate degree in Electronics, Industrial Systems, Electrical Controls, or related field preferred
- Equivalent experience or technical training may be considered
- 0–2 years of technical or field service experience
- Entry-level candidates with strong mechanical aptitude encouraged
Working Conditions
- The majority of work is done in a commercial poultry hatchery where exposure to a potentially hazardous environment is possible
- Heat and humidity above average are common
- Available for on-call/after-hours work beyond a standard 40-hour work week to respond to customer emergency calls (via telephone, video, and face-to-face)
- Lift more than 50 pounds
- Daily travel up to 100% of the time, but less than 50% overnight travel
- Occasional travel to TARGAN headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina for training
