Grocery Store Manager
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced and hands-on Grocery Store Manager to oversee the daily operations of a full-service grocery store in Hamilton, Ontario. This location includes a lunch counter, deli, fresh meat department, produce section, and packaged goods. The ideal candidate is a results-driven leader with strong operational, merchandising, and team management skills, and a passion for delivering exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Store Operations
- Oversee all aspects of daily store operations, ensuring smooth and efficient performance across all departments
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and food safety throughout the store
- Ensure compliance with all provincial health, safety, and food handling regulations
- Monitor inventory levels, control shrink, and manage ordering to optimize stock and minimize waste
Department Oversight
- Supervise and support department leads for deli, fresh meats, produce, lunch counter, and grocery
- Ensure proper merchandising, rotation, and presentation of all products
- Maintain quality standards for fresh food offerings, including meats, prepared foods, and produce
- Collaborate with department teams to drive sales and promote high-margin items
Customer Experience
- Deliver an outstanding in-store experience and resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally
- Foster a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere
- Monitor customer feedback and implement improvements where needed
Staff Management
- Recruit, hire, train, and develop store staff
- Schedule employees effectively to meet business needs and control labour costs
- Lead by example to build a positive, accountable, and high-performance team culture
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching
Financial Performance
- Manage store budgets, sales targets, and profitability
- Analyze sales reports and KPIs to identify opportunities for growth and improvement
- Control expenses including labour, inventory, and operational costs
Health & Food Safety
- Ensure strict adherence to food safety standards, especially in deli, meat, and prepared food areas
- Maintain proper storage, handling, and labeling of all food products
- Prepare for and successfully pass all inspections
Qualifications
- 5+ years of retail grocery management experience, preferably in a full-service store
- Strong knowledge of fresh departments (meat, deli, produce, prepared foods)
- Proven leadership and team-building skills
- Solid understanding of inventory management, merchandising, and loss prevention
- Familiarity with Ontario health and food safety regulations
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing a store with a lunch counter or prepared foods program
- Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Experience with POS systems and retail management software
