Mechanical Design Engineer - Munition
Destinus is a technology and defense company based in Madrid, Spain, focused on cutting‑edge UAV solutions and mission‑critical operations.
The R&D engineering team is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a passion for aerospace. The ideal candidate will have at least 8 years of experience with strong applied engineering skills and an aptitude for leading small engineering teams and projects. In this role, you will support the propulsion and vehicle teams as the focal point for leading mechanical design projects (Airframe, Propulsion, Landing Gear, Flight Controls) through the entire design life cycle.
Responsibilities
- Work on design projects for airborne munitions components and systems from the conceptual phase through manufacturing to integration and testing.
- Generate 3D CAD models, drawings, schematics, bills of material, and other related documentation required for manufacturing, integration, and testing.
- Design and qualify energetic and pyrotechnic sub‑systems for defence applications.
- Deliver technical documentation, including engineering calculations, analysis, and assumptions required to substantiate design decisions.
- Prepare and participate in design reviews.
- Manage suppliers and manufacturers by addressing technical questions and resolving issues during manufacturing.
- Select standard parts, fasteners, equipment, and consumables following best practices and industry standards.
- Contribute to the DMU and configuration management.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes in safety‑critical or defence‑machining, sheet metal forming, composites, and additive manufacturing.
- Experience in design and manufacturing of warheads and munitions, especially safe and arming devices, ignition or gun‑launched ammunition.
- Excellent CAD and PLM knowledge – part design, DWGs, DMU management.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and analytical skills – dimensioning calculations, load path definitions, basic stress calculations, energy and power.
- Advantageous to have worked on the design and development of safing systems, ISDs and other safety‑critical military sub‑systems.
- Advantageous to have worked in warhead or payload design.
- Experience with STANAG norms.
- Seal and fastener design knowledge.
- Auxiliary component selection – general electro/mechanical components.
- ISO GD&T knowledge required.
- Proficiency in Siemens tool suite – NX and TeamCenter PLM system, would be a plus.
- Good engineering material properties knowledge.
- Explosives handling licence would be a plus.
- BSc., MSc. in mechanical or aerospace engineering (or equivalent technician qualifications with substantial experience).
- Fluent in English, our working language.
