Job Description
The senior Mechanical Plant Layout Designer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and revising 2D/3D plant layouts and mechanical equipment arrangements for heavy industrial facilities and mining projects. Working within a multidisciplinary EPC environment, the designer ensures layouts are safe, constructible, cost-effective, and aligned with project standards and client requirements. This role collaborates closely with mechanical engineers, piping designers, civil/structural teams, and project management to deliver high-quality design packages during FEED, detailed engineering, and construction phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and modify 2D/3D plant models using tools such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Smart Plant 3D.
- Create equipment layout drawings, general arrangement (GA) drawings, and layout plans.
- Ensure safe and accessible equipment placement considering maintenance clearance, operability, and safety regulations.
- Work with mechanical engineers to position rotating and static equipment, including pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, tanks, filters, and packaged equipment.
- Interpret vendor drawings, equipment data sheets, and technical specifications to accurately model and place equipment.
- Develop tie-in points, equipment nozzles, and interface details needed for piping routing.
- Interface with piping, structural, electrical, HVAC, and civil teams to maintain discipline alignment in the plant model.
- Participate in model reviews (30%, 60%, 90%) and update the model based on interdisciplinary comments.
- Coordinate layout solutions that support constructability, modularization, and site installation strategies.
- Produce 2D deliverables.
- Develop material take-offs (MTOs) and ensure adherence to project and client drafting standards.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes (ASME, API, CSA), safety requirements, and EPC guidelines.
- Review layouts for quality, accuracy, accessibility, and consistency with design intent and standards.
Basic Job Requirements
- Accredited two-year degree or global equivalent in applicable field of study and twenty (20) years of work-related experience, or a combination of education and related experience equal to twenty-two (22) years if non-degreed. Some locations may have additional or different qualifications to comply with local requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors.
- Job-related technical knowledge necessary to complete the job.
- Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines.
- Attention to detail and ability to work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
- Knowledge of commercial availability and cost of materials.
- Practical field experience.
- Intermediate computer and software skills, including word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet, and electronic presentation programs.
Other Job Requirements
- SP3D, E3D/PDMS, Smart Plant 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation.
- Ability to perform clash checks and participate in model review sessions.

Work Schedule and Compensation
Compressed work schedule: Fluor Canada offices offer every second Friday off. Salary is based on experience with a range of $110,500.00 – $204,500.00. The market rate is typically at the mid-point of the salary range, with final salary determined by qualifications, experience, location, internal pay equity, and market conditions.
