Job Description
Security Officer
The position patrols all college properties, including the Sarasota Art Museum, to protect students, faculty, staff, visitors, and facilities of the Ringling College campus. Observes and reports violations of campus policies, rule infractions and safety hazards. Responds to all situations on campus and requests the assistance of police, fire and emergency medical personnel when needed.
Records activities on incident reports and daily activity reports.
Duties and responsibilities include patrolling buildings, grounds and parking lots on the college, making regular checks of doors, windows and gates to determine they are secure, enforcing campus parking rules and regulations and issuing parking citations when necessary, recording all information on incidents such as property damage, unusual occurrences, machinery or equipment malfunction for use by supervisory staff and various college administrators, preparing all necessary reports in a timely manner, warning violators of rule infractions and stopping any activity determined to be illegal, unsafe or in violation of campus rules of conduct or policy and recording those violations through Incident Reports, watching for and reporting through Incident Reports any irregularities such as safety hazards, leaking water pipes, lights left on and doors left unlocked, responding to and handling emergency situations; providing assistance as necessary including first aid and CPR, and providing shift coverage when needed.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include the ability to perform public safety responsibilities in a professional and caring manner, ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing including the completion of a variety of reports, ability to prioritize when dealing with multiple high priority situations, ability to maintain confidentiality on all records, reports, and incidents that are investigated by the Office of Public Safety; as well as any other record and/or information that is accessible to the Office of Public Safety, excellent observational skills, and strong interpersonal skills such as courtesy, listening, and dealing tactfully with a variety of personalities.
Working conditions and physical requirements include the ability to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods of time, run when necessary, climb up to five flights of stairs quickly without rest to respond to emergencies, lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs. with no assistance, and ability to work in adverse weather conditions. Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to communicate clearly and with understanding via landline telephone, cell phone, two-way radio and in person. Must have clear vision in a variety of light settings.
Manual dexterity to check locks, doors, windows, etc. Ability to think clearly and quickly under potentially stressful and dangerous circumstances. Ability to maintain composure and function in emergency and/or confrontational situations.
Education and experience include minimum qualifications of high school diploma or equivalent, basic computer skills including entering data and sending/receiving e-mail and the ability to accurately type reports, possession of a valid Florida's Driver's license, possession or ability to obtain certification in basic First Aid and CPR within 12 months, possession or ability to obtain a Class D security officer license within 12 months, and ability to effectively communicate verbally. Preferred experience includes general security experience and experience with incident and other types of reporting. This position requires a Criminal and Motor Vehicle Background Check.
