Job Description
Security Guard – Open Studios Event (40 Cumberland Road)
The building will be open to the public and operating as an active event space with workshops, talks, demonstrations, and informal visitor access throughout multiple floors. The nearest transport links include Wood Green, London Underground, and the surrounding area of Alexandra Palace.
Core Responsibilities
Access Control and Entry Management
- Manage entry and exit points during busy periods
- Ensure only authorised visitors enter restricted studio or staff areas
- Prevent overcrowding in entrances, corridors, and stairwells
- Maintain controlled but welcoming visitor flow
Visitor Safety and Safeguarding
- Enforce safeguarding rules, including supervision of children at all times
- Identify and respond to lost children or vulnerable individuals
- De‑scale disputes, unsafe behaviour, or disruption
- Maintain a visible but calm security presence
Protection of Property and Artwork
- Monitor studios and shared areas to reduce risk of theft or damage
- Prevent visitors from touching artwork unless permitted
- Support artists in protecting their workspaces during public access
- Ensure high‑value or fragile pieces are not exposed to unnecessary risk
Crowd Management
- Manage queues for workshops, talks, and demonstrations
- Prevent congestion in stairwells, corridors, and studio entrances
- Redirect visitor flow during peak periods
- Monitor safe occupancy levels across floors
Emergency and Incident Response
- Respond to medical incidents, including fainting or injury
- Support evacuation procedures in case of fire or alarm activation
- Assist with lost persons procedures
- Coordinate with emergency services where necessary
Building Monitoring
- Conduct regular patrols across all floors of the building
- Ensure toilets, accessible facilities, and communal areas remain safe and usable
- Identify and report hazards such as trip risks or blocked exits
- Maintain awareness of changes in crowd behaviour or building conditions
Visitor Support
- Provide directions and general assistance to visitors
- Support wayfinding between studios, workshops, and exits
- Maintain a professional and approachable manner while enforcing rules
