Senior Database Platform & Performance Engineer
SysCloud
Job Description
Position: Senior Database Platform & Performance Engineer
Experience: 4–7 years (hands-on Postgres in production)
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor‘s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- A higher qualification (Master‘s degree) in a relevant technical discipline is a plus
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 3+ years of experience managing PostgreSQL in production environments
- Strong expertise in query optimization, indexing, partitioning, and database tuning
- Experience with AWS RDS (PostgreSQL)
- Proven ability to execute zero or low-downtime schema changes and large-table migrations
- Solid knowledge of security practices — RLS, RBAC, etc.
- Added advantage if any other database technology is known
Key Responsibilities
1. PostgreSQL Performance & Reliability
- Diagnose and optimize query execution plans, indexing, and partitioning for large-scale workloads
- Tune VACUUM/autovacuum behavior, connection pooling (PgBouncer), and key configuration parameters (work_mem, shared_buffers, effective_cache_size)
- Implement high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) using synchronous/asynchronous replication and PITR with pgBackRest
- Plan and execute large-table migrations, blue/green upgrades, and schema changes with minimal downtime
2. Database Platform Engineering
- Design and evolve the Postgres platform across compute environments (managed services such as AWS RDS, EC2, Fargate)
- Drive sharding or tenant-partitioning strategies as needed for scale and isolation
3. Observability & Instrumentation
- Enable deep visibility using pg_stat_statements, auto_explain, query sampling/profiling, and end-to-end tracing
- Build actionable Grafana/CloudWatch dashboards and alerting pipelines for query latency, throughput, and replication lag SLOs
4. Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain robust access control models (RLS/ABAC/RBAC)
5. Schema & SQL Design Partnership
- Collaborate with application engineers on data modeling, schema evolution, and performance-aware API patterns
- Review and guide database migrations (Liquibase or similar) to ensure efficiency and safety
6. Incident Response & Reliability Operations
- Lead Sev-1/Sev-2 database incidents end-to-end: detection, mitigation, RCA, and long-term hardening
- Define and track SLOs for latency, throughput, and uptime across regions
7. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing
- Conduct SQL performance clinics and internal workshops to upskill developers
- Author and maintain documentation, runbooks, and best-practice guides to reduce key-person risk
8. Roadmapping & Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate and adopt extensions (e.g., pg_partman, pg_cron, pg_repack) and new Postgres versions
- Lead blue/green or rolling upgrade strategies for databases and supporting services
- Partner with product and infra teams to align capacity planning and technology evolution with business growth
