Senior Product Designer
Wave Mobile Money
Job Description
Join to apply for the Senior Product Designer role at Wave Mobile Money.
Our Mission
We're making Africa the first cashless continent. In 2017, over half the population in Sub‑Sahel had no bank account. Fees were too high, branches were far, and cards weren’t accepted.
Wave solves this by building financial services that just work – no account fees, instant availability, and acceptance everywhere. We launched a mobile app in Senegal in 2017 and now serve millions of users across nine countries.
How You’ll Help Us Achieve It
Wave is the largest financial institution in Senegal, with over 7 million users, and we’re still growing fast. In this role, you will help design mobile apps for iOS and Android that make financial services accessible and inclusive for millions of people.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with product managers, researchers, engineers, and data analysts throughout feature development.
- Create high‑quality designs, interactions, and prototypes using Figma.
- Craft user research plans and partner with product operations analysts to validate solutions through user testing.
- Contribute to Wave’s design system and component library.
- Talk to customers and find solutions by thinking critically from their perspective.
- Communicate product decision reasoning in review sessions.
- Prototype visual and UX concepts and iterate toward the right solution.
Key Details
- This is a fully remote role. Candidates must be based in one of our hiring hubs (US, UK, Spain, Kenya, Ghana, Canada) or in one of our operating markets in Africa, including Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso.
- Travel to a key market for a 1‑week immersion trip with your immediate team (all costs covered). You’ll also travel to a market country twice a year with the design lead and PMs, and are encouraged to visit market countries more often. A yearly stipend of $1,200 USD is provided for meeting with coworkers.
- Salaries are competitive and calculated using a transparent formula, paid in your local currency equivalent plus a generous equity package. For this role we offer up to 216,900 USD based on location.
- Major benefits:
- Subsidized health insurance for you and your dependents and retirement contributions (vary by country).
- 6 months fully paid parental leave and subsidized fertility assistance.
- Flexible vacation, most folks take 21–30 days excluding statutory holidays.
- $10,000 annual charitable donation matching.
Requirements
- Fluency in English.
- At least 8 years of end‑to‑end in‑house experience, preferably with a consumer‑focused product design on mobile apps.
- Excellent visual and interaction design skills, with an eye for removing friction from flows.
- Attention to detail and high level of visual craft.
- Strong illustration and animation skills (After Effects or convertible to Lottie).
- Ability to deliver high‑quality designs with speed and polish.
- Bias towards action – identify UX improvements without waiting for perfect conditions.
- Experience with low and high‑fidelity design & prototyping.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to think through complex interaction design and trade‑offs for each solution.
- Curiosity for understanding and unpacking customer behaviours and needs.
- Experience balancing business goals, customer needs, and technical trade‑offs while explaining your perspective to the team.
You Might Be a Good Fit If You
- Are detail‑oriented and able to balance multiple projects.
- Can iterate separate concepts quickly for user testing; moving fast and updating designs based on feedback.
- Think carefully about in‑the‑weeds details and how they fit within the design system.
- Feel comfortable anticipating and designing for edge cases.
- Enjoy pairing with designers, engineers, and product managers.
- Are excited to learn about how all our products work together.
- Can speak, read, and write in French (nice to have but not required).
Our Team
- Rapidly growing in‑country teams in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Uganda, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon, plus remote team members worldwide.
- Deeply passionate about bringing affordable financial services to those who need them most.
- Foster autonomy: own projects at every stage, from problem understanding to production monitoring.
- Raised Africa’s largest Series A in 2021 with investors like Founders Fund, Sequoia Heritage, Stripe, Ribbit Capital, Y Combinator, and Partech Africa.
- On Y Combinator’s list of top companies by revenue.
