SUMMARY:
Plans and provides direct and consultative services to students with visual impairments. Assesses students and plans instruction and intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students' ability to derive benefit from the educational program.
BASIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services; participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
- Design, construct, and alter equipment; provide students with adaptive equipment and devices; adapt or recommend adaptation of the school environment.
- Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with visual and orientation/mobility goals contained in students' Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Evaluate student progress.
- Prepare reports and maintain appropriate documentation including goals, objectives and schedules in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the student; establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Consult parents, teachers, and administrators concerning the educational needs and progress of students.
- Establish and maintain professional communication with parents, students, and district personnel; ensure that all interactions are supportive, courteous, and respectful.
- Provide staff development training in assigned school(s) to assist school personnel understanding of the visual impairment program.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the areas of needed medical reports, assessment, placement, and planning for special education services; comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations, and verbal and written directives.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of diagnostic procedures and education of special education students
- Knowledge of medical information and indications for visual impairment and O& M services
- Ability to keep technical and professional records and to make appropriate reports and recommendations
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in education or related program
- Master's degree (preferred)
- Valid Texas special education certification, visual impairment certification, and O& M certification
Experience:
- One (1) year successful experience as a special education teacher
MENTAL/PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting
- Moderate lifting and carrying required in working with special education students
