Vice President – Engineering
Design, Validation & NPI (Up to SOP)
Reports to: COO
Role Summary
Own end-to-end engineering from concept through validation and NPI readiness (SOP). Responsible for product architecture, design integrity, and ensuring products are technically robust and ready for manufacturing.
Work in close partnership with Manufacturing, with co-governance on ECOs (Manufacturing has final release veto).
Key Responsibilities
1. Product Architecture & Design
- Own system architecture across mechanical, electronics, and firmware
- Lead deep technical design reviews
- Define and enforce CTQs (Critical-to-Quality)
2. Validation & Testing (EVT/DVT)
- Own EVT, DVT, and pre-PVT readiness
- Ensure all validation is structured, documented, and repeatable
- Drive reliability, compliance, and performance validation
3. NPI Execution (Up to SOP)
- Lead engineering execution through NPI phases
- Ensure BOM freeze discipline and design maturity
- Prevent premature production release
4. Engineering Change Control (ECO)
- Own design-side ECO creation, validation, and documentation
- Ensure full regression validation before release
- Align with Manufacturing for production approval
5. Failure Analysis & Continuous Improvement
- Lead root cause analysis for design-related failures
- Implement systemic fixes across product architecture
- Drive learning loop into next product iterations
6. Team Leadership
- Lead cross-functional engineering teams:
- Mechanical
- Electronics / Embedded
- Firmware / Systems
- Build a strong engineering culture with high technical rigor
Ownership Boundaries
- Owns: Design, validation, NPI readiness
- Does NOT own: Mass production, yield, supplier performance
Experience Required
- 12–18+ years in consumer electronics / electromechanical products
- Strong experience in EVT/DVT/PVT cycles and NPI
- Experience working with ODMs/CMs (e.g., Foxconn, Flex Ltd., Jabil Inc.)
Technical Strength
- Deep expertise in system design & integration
- Strong understanding of tolerance stack-ups & reliability
- Hands-on ability to challenge and refine designs
Success Metrics
- First-pass EVT/DVT success rate
- Reduction in design-originated field failures
- NPI readiness quality at SOP
- ECO validation effectiveness
