Assistant Director, Office of Medical Education
George Washington University
Job Description
Job Overview
Assistant Director, Office of Medical Education (OME) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). SMHS, founded in 1824, is the 11th oldest medical school in the United States and offers a range of highly ranked programs in health and biomedical sciences. The OME is a centralized unit that develops, delivers, and manages curriculum for undergraduate medical education.
The Assistant Director coordinates course and curriculum support for the MD Program and directly supervises curriculum support staff.
Key responsibilities include administrative policies, procedures, timekeeping, and personnel oversight, managing day‑to‑day operations, enhancing unit efficiency, and maintaining institutional policies and procedures. The role also provides strategic recommendations for the unit budget and oversees student schedule management and general programmatic assistance.
Responsibilities
- Operational & Curricular Management: Oversee the day‑to‑day operational, administrative, and logistical needs required to manage the MD Program curriculum and OME unit planning. Partner with MD program OME leadership to manage operational, curricular, and academic affairs supporting deans, faculty, and students. Facilitate training for OME staff and faculty on educational technology and systems necessary to operationalize the MD curriculum. Collaborate with IT, MD program operations, and other administrators to improve systems and enhance the medical degree program. Implement best practices in curriculum management, maintain the curriculum database, ensure alignment of course learning objectives and activities with program goals, and contribute to ongoing course development efforts alongside program leadership.
- Team Leadership & Personnel Management: Directly supervise and mentor OME staff, serve as a primary leadership resource for the entire team, evaluate staff performance in accordance with university policy, conduct regular performance reviews, and establish clear professional development plans. Serve as the primary escalation point for OME staff and stakeholders to resolve ongoing operational and administrative issues.
- Direct Course Support: Provide direct administrative and management support for assigned courses. Maintain learning management systems such as Blackboard and oversee accurate tracking of OME student records, including grades, deliverables, attendance, and exceptional circumstances.
- Additional duties: Perform other work‑related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties logically related to the position.
