Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing managerial and programmatic direction for the operation of Pharmacy Services. It develops, budgets, sets standards of work performance and plans, directs, monitors, and evaluates the provision of distributive and clinical pharmacy services. The role promotes effective interdisciplinary collaboration, serves as a facilitator for education, consultation, and research, and leads the operational activities of the Department of Pharmacy Services.
It ensures departmental functions align with policies and procedures, supervises purchasing, receiving, storage, delivery, and distribution of medications, maintains adequate staffing, supports clinical plan implementation, and maintains pharmacy information systems. The position develops standards of performance, orientation, and training programs while adhering to all local, state, and federal pharmacy laws.
Core Functions
- Responsible for all routine operations of Pharmacy Services, including recruitment, selection, orientation, professional development, and evaluation of employees.
- Maintains effective departmental operations within budgetary constraints and promotes rational, cost‑effective medication therapy.
- Assists in developing goals, objectives, and programs for the pharmacy department aligned with the organization’s strategic plan, and plans efficient utilization of resources. Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and implements decisions of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Defines and resolves issues with the medication distribution system, continually evaluates performance, and implements innovative systems for safe delivery of medications.
- Provides leadership and direction to pharmacy staff, fosters a supportive work environment, and promotes positive relations across the system.
- Establishes and revises standards of care for pharmacy practice, monitors compliance with policies and regulatory agencies, investigates and resolves customer complaints, and leads quality improvement efforts.
- Serves as a professional resource in facilitating inter‑disciplinary practice and communication.
- Participates in all aspects of medication use—selection, procurement, storage, ordering, dispensing, administering, and monitoring—for internal and external customers.
Minimum Qualities/Qualifications
- Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy.
- Current pharmacy licensure in the state of practice within 90 days of hire. Incumbents in Arizona must provide an AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
- Good organizational, problem‑solving, computer, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer software, especially medication management information systems, Microsoft applications, and automated dispensing systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree, hospital residency, or MBA.
- Experience in hospital pharmacy with supervisory experience.
- Additional related education and/or experience.
