About the Role
The Company is seeking an Associate General Counsel (AGC) for Nonprofit Compliance to lead its legal and regulatory work in the areas of grantmaking, fiscal sponsorship, and advocacy. The AGC will be responsible for translating nonprofit legal and regulatory frameworks into effective compliance and risk mitigation systems. This includes overseeing the legal compliance team, ensuring policies and systems for 501(c)(3) and general corporate compliance are robust and operationally sound, and leading the internal assessment and audit function.
The role also involves serving as an expert on nonprofit legal matters, providing legal advice on a range of issues, and monitoring and responding to legal and regulatory developments affecting the nonprofit sector. The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctor and an active California law license or be a registered in-house counsel, with at least 8 years of experience advising nonprofit tax-exempt organizations. They should have a deep understanding of 501(c)(3) public charity laws, federal and state lobbying, political activity, and campaign finance rules, and experience in supervising or leading compliance teams.
The AGC must be a strategic leader, with the ability to build and develop a high-performing legal compliance function, and have a strong alignment with the company's values and mission. Proficiency in legal compliance matters, excellent communication skills, and the ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice are essential. Experience with fiscal sponsorship, grantmaking, and multi-entity nonprofit structures is strongly preferred.
