Overview
The UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Privacy Office is seeking an Associate General Counsel to advance its mission of making the health system work better for everyone. This role has a solid focus on HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, state privacy and breach notification laws, and the implementation of emerging federal and state privacy requirements. The position supports the Optum lines of business, including OptumRX and OptumInsight, and is ideal for a privacy attorney interested in pharmacy, data and AI related issues.
The role reports to the Deputy Chief Privacy Officer and will partner closely with Optum compliance and legal partners.
You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted privacy advisor to Optum lines of business, with deep focus on HIPAA and state privacy law compliance
- Advise on regulatory change management and support implementation of emerging federal and state privacy requirements
- Design and operationalize provider specific privacy programs, including training, communications, policies and procedures, and Notices of Privacy Practices
- Provide privacy support for business associate agreements and contracting in collaboration with segment legal and contracting teams
- Counsel the incident management team and lead responses to regulatory inquiries, including OCR investigations, HHS reporting, and state attorney general matters
- Deliver clear, actionable privacy updates and reporting to business and privacy leadership on a regular cadence
- Collaborate with internal partners on privacy due diligence for acquisitions and integration activities
- Draft and coordinate responses to government requests for comment on proposed privacy regulations
- Conduct and advise on privacy assessments, audits, and compliance reviews
- Monitor the evolving privacy landscape and translate legal and industry developments into practical guidance
- Partner closely with Privacy, Compliance, Legal and cross functional stakeholders across Optum

Required Qualifications
- JD Degree
- Current license to practice law
- 5+ years of experience practicing law
- 3+ years of experience in privacy legal environment
- Experience in health care Privacy Law
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) designation or similar
- Familiarity with legal research tools such as LexisNexis
- Ability and experience working in a fast paced matrixed environment

The salary for this role will range from $134,600 to $230,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
