Job Description
Cambridge Muslim College is looking for an experienced and capable Buildings and Facilities Manager to take charge of its estate and help create the physical conditions in which excellent work can happen. The College is small, intellectually serious, and doing something genuinely distinctive. It trains a generation of Muslim scholars and leaders who are grounded in their tradition and equipped to engage with contemporary Britain.
The buildings, spaces and systems that support that work matter. They need to be well-run, well-maintained, and steadily developed. That's where you come in.
The Role As Buildings and Facilities Manager, you will take full operational and strategic responsibility for the College's estate, including its main site in central Cambridge and a portfolio of residential properties. This is a hands-on leadership role that spans day-to-day building management, health and safety compliance, contractor oversight, capital projects, and property acquisitions. You will report to the Registrar and line manage the Facilities Assistant and Facilities Coordinator.
This is a role with real breadth. You will manage budgets and service contracts, lead on planned and reactive maintenance, handle regulatory compliance, and work with architects, surveyors and solicitors on longer-term development. You will also have a hand in the quality and feel of College spaces — from interior design decisions to the standards that shape how the estate presents itself.
Salary: £40,000–£45,000 per annum | Contract: Full-time, Permanent | Location: Onsite, Cambridge (a ten-minute walk from Cambridge Railway Station) What You Will Do Build and manage the day-to-day operation of the College's buildings, grounds and offsite residential properties Lead on health and safety, statutory compliance and risk management across the estate Manage contractors, service contracts and procurement activity Oversee capital projects, property acquisitions and long-term estate development Manage the facilities and estates budget and financial administration Lead on interior design and the quality and standards of College spaces Line manage the Facilities Assistant and Facilities Coordinator What We Are Looking For Essential: Experience in a facilities management role, ideally in an educational or charitable environment Experience of property acquisition, estate development or capital project delivery Experience managing planning applications and regulatory approvals (e.g. HMO licensing) Experience working with professional consultants — architects, surveyors, solicitors Experience of procurement, contract management and project management Sound working knowledge of health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act, Fire Safety Act and Building Safety Act Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, contractors and external stakeholders Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a busy, varied workload A flexible, can-do approach to problem-solving Desirable: Facilities management or health and safety qualifications (e.g. IWFM, NEBOSH or IOSH) Experience implementing strategic plans and managing change in an operational environment How to Apply To apply, or for an informal conversation about the role, please contact the Registrar, Yaseen Stoffberg, at with your CV and a covering letter outlining your suitability.
