Position SummaryBird Rock Systems is seeking a mid-level Cloud Engineer who enjoys hands-on delivery, working directly with customers, and building cloud environments that are secure, scalable, and built to last.
This is a client-facing, billable role within our professional services organization. You will work closely with customers, senior engineers, and architects to design, implement, and improve cloud and hybrid environmentsprimarily within Azure-centric ecosystems.
We are looking for engineers who want to grow professionally: people who value craftsmanship, long-term ownership, and continuous improvement over chasing titles or short-term projects.
This role is intentionally focused and will primarily concentrate on three to four of the following areas:Cloud Infrastructure & Platform EngineeringDesign and implementation of cloud and hybrid infrastructureCompute, storage, networking, and identity integrationBuilding resilient, scalable environments aligned to customer needsAzure & M365-Centric Cloud SolutionsAzure landing zones, subscriptions, and resource organizationMicrosoft 365 services and identity integrationSupporting customers as they mature their cloud operating modelCloud Security & GovernanceSecure-by-design cloud configurationsIdentity, access, and policy enforcementGovernance guardrails that enablenot blockbusiness outcomesAutomation, Operations, & IntegrationInfrastructure as Code and repeatable deployment patternsAutomation to reduce manual effort and improve reliabilityIntegrating cloud platforms with adjacent systems and tools
LocationMust be based in Southern California or Phoenix, Arizona. Visits to our San Diego office may be required at the managers discretion.This role requires onsite presence as often as needed based on customer engagements. Travel is driven by client needs and project scope.
Main DutiesDeliver client-facing, billable cloud engineering work across customer engagementsDesign, implement, and improve cloud and hybrid environmentsSupport migrations, modernization efforts, and operational improvementsPartner with senior engineers and architects to expand your technical depthEmbrace a mindset of continuous improvement - for systems, processes, and yourselfContribute to internal standards, templates, and delivery best practicesProduce clean, professional, client-ready documentation and diagramsCollaborate with customers to understand requirements and translate them into practical solutionsWork onsite with customers as required to support successful delivery
Use of AI in Your WorkflowWe value Cloud Engineers who use AI to improve efficiency - such as accelerating research, troubleshooting, scripting, or documentation - while maintaining sound engineering judgment and validation. Curiosity about expanding AI adoption for support capability over time is encouraged.
Technology EnvironmentYoull work with cloud platforms and tools aligned to Bird Rock Systems technology partners and professional services offerings, with a strong emphasis on Azure, hybrid cloud, and Microsoft-centric environments. Specific tools vary by customer, reinforcing the importance of fundamentals and adaptability.
What You BringQualifications & Experience36 years of hands-on cloud or infrastructure engineering experiencePrior client-facing experience or strong customer communication skillsSolid understanding of networking, identity, and infrastructure fundamentals
A mindset oriented toward long-term ownership and growth, not short-term winsComfort working onsite with customers as engagements requirePractical experience in Azure and hybrid environments
Preferred Skills How You WorkConsulting, MSP, or professional services experienceScripting or automation skills (PowerShell, Python)
Relevant certifications (Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, or similar)Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, etc.)

CompensationCompensation Range: $115,000 - $150,000The aboverepresents the expected compensation range for this job requisition. Ultimately, in determining pay, well consider location, experience, and other job-related factors.
