Commercial Litigation Attorney
Location: Baton Rouge, LA
Salary: $140k-$180k/yr
Billables: 1900
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Commercial Litigation Attorney to join our litigation team and manage a diverse caseload of complex business disputes. The attorney will be responsible for developing litigation strategy, drafting pleadings and motions, overseeing discovery, taking and defending depositions, representing clients in court, and working closely with clients to achieve favorable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a full docket of commercial litigation matters from intake through resolution, including trials, arbitrations, and appeals.
- Counsel clients on litigation strategy, risk assessment, case budgeting, and settlement options.
- Draft and file complaints, answers, dispositive motions, and other pleadings; prepare hearing and trial materials.
- Plan, oversee, and respond to discovery requests, including document production, interrogatories, and requests for admission.
- Take and defend depositions of parties and witnesses; prepare witnesses for testimony.
- Conduct legal research and draft persuasive legal memoranda and briefs.
- Appear in court for hearings, status conferences, motion practice, and trials; advocate effectively before judges and mediators.
- Collaborate with internal teams and outside experts; supervise and mentor junior attorneys and paralegals.
- Manage client communications, case files, deadlines, and billing in accordance with firm policies.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active admission to the state bar.
- Minimum 3-6 years of experience practicing commercial litigation in a law firm or corporate legal department; trial experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with depositions, motion practice, and discovery management.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills, with a record of drafting high-quality briefs and motions.
- Proven ability to develop litigation strategy, evaluate case strengths and weaknesses, and achieve favorable resolutions.
- Comfortable managing heavy caseloads, supervising support staff, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with legal research platforms (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis) and litigation management tools.
- Excellent client service skills, professional demeanor, and ability to work collaboratively.
- Willingness to travel to courts and client sites as needed.
