Job Summary
The Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for planning, directing, and administering Albany State University's environmental health, occupational safety, and regulatory compliance programs. The position ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and University System of Georgia policies. The Director promotes a proactive campus culture focused on safety, environmental stewardship, and risk mitigation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive environmental health and safety programs.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and Georgia regulations.
- Manage hazardous materials, chemical safety, laboratory safety, and hazardous waste disposal programs.
- Conduct campus-wide safety inspections, risk assessments, and compliance audits.
- Develop and maintain written safety plans and regulatory documentation.
- Investigate accidents and incidents and recommend corrective actions.
- Conduct safety and environmental compliance training.
- Serve as liaison with regulatory agencies and emergency responders.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and incident response.
- May supervise EHS staff, safety coordinators, or contracted professionals. Responsible for staff development, performance management, and program oversight.
- Collaborate with Facilities Management, Public Safety and Risk Management.
- Prepare safety reports and compliance metrics.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Engineering, Public Health, or related field.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive EHS management experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and occupational safety regulations.
- Experience conducting inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
- Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
- Professional certification Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CSP, CIH, CHMM).
- Experience in higher education or public sector environments.
- Experience managing environmental compliance and laboratory safety programs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Expert understanding of OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
- Knowledge of hazardous waste management, indoor air quality, and remediation protocols.
- Ability to lead teams, build a safety culture, and manage budgets and strategic planning.
- Ability to analyze data and communicate complex safety findings to leadership and regulatory agencies.
- Skills in conducting risk assessments and root cause analysis of incidents.
- Competence in EHS management software and data analysis tools.
Conditions of Employment
- All selected candidates are required to successfully pass a Background Check review prior to starting with Albany State University.
- Positions may also require a credit check for "Positions of Trust" and/or approved departmental purchase card usage.
- Positions that require driving an Albany State University vehicle may require a motor vehicle report.
