Position Summary
The Director of Secondary Education is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring the comprehensive educational programming for grades 7-12 in all curricular areas to ensure high levels of student achievement.
Qualifications
- Hold a New Jersey certificate as Principal or School Administrator in accordance with the requirements of N.J.A.C. 6A:9B-12.5 or N.J.A.C. 6A:9B-12.4, respectively.
- Hold a Master’s Degree in Administration or a related area.
- Have a minimum of five consecutive years of documented and proven public school administration experience. This experience shall immediately precede the application for this job description’s position.
- Strong knowledge of, and experience in, data analysis, curriculum development and implementation.
- Other qualifications as may be required as determined by the Superintendent of Schools.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
- Hold a valid driver’s license with no serious infractions.
- Troubleshooting: Be able to find the root cause of issues and think logically about solutions.
- Critical Thinking: When diagnosing problems, think critically in their process of resolving the issue.
- Knowledge: Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; develop, implement and maintain teacher support and training programs; understand District curriculum and content standards; understand District organization, operations, policies and objectives; apply principles and practices of administration, supervision and training; provide training and work direction; apply appropriate codes, laws, regulations, policies and procedures; operate a computer and assigned software and maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability: Schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. - Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Provide a sworn statement that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.1 during the initial six-month employment period.
- Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test in accordance with N.J.A.C 63-4A-4.
- Post‑offer/Pre‑employment Physical: The person selected for this position must meet all requirements of the physical examination, including a color vision test, administered by a medical service selected by the East Brunswick Public Schools.
Job Functions & Responsibilities
- Serves as a member of the Central Office/Management Team and works collaboratively with team members in their respective areas of responsibility. Attends Board of Education meetings and prepare such reports and agenda items for the Board as the Superintendent may direct.
- Provides curriculum direction and articulates related expectations to schools.
- Ensures curriculum is aligned to state standards and other state mandates. Prepares and maintains documentation for state monitoring.
- Together with the Assistant Superintendent of Academics, oversees the implementation of curriculum, and assists building administrators in ensuring the optimal delivery of instruction.
- Annually establishes instructional program objectives in conjunction with curriculum Supervisors.
- Stimulates new and innovative approaches to curriculum and instruction, especially in areas of technology integration and 21 st century learning.
- Coordinates District scheduling cooperatively with Principals to maximize staffing and instructional time.
- In response to evaluations of existing programs and the assessment of future needs, recommends the reordering of priorities in curriculum and instruction.
- Keep accurate records related to the position’s responsibilities, as well as directed by management. Demonstrate a positive and cooperative attitude; appropriate grooming and attire; and, effective work ethic.
- Performs evaluations of teaching and administrative staff in accordance with District-selected state approved models.
- Supports District Testing Coordinator in implementing state mandated standardized tests.
- Oversees implementation of assessments and analysis of results.
- In collaboration with admin, oversees Tier 1 instruction based on assessment trends and monitors results. Trains and supports instructional coaches and ensure the role’s consistency among schools.
- Supervises the system of personnel evaluation in accordance with state regulations; oversees evaluation procedures and timelines so that personnel evaluation procedures are accomplished in a fair and consistent manner that encourages accountability and growth and excellence in accordance with law, Board Policy, and contractual requirements. Facilitates tenure meetings.
- In collaboration with administrators, coordinates the District’s staff development and professional development programs, including in-service days, summer workshops, out-of-district workshops and teacher leadership initiatives. Supervises the system of providing professional development for each category of employment. Plans and presents District-wide training for staff-mandates topics including, but not limited to, teacher evaluations, suicide prevention, HIB, and Right-to-Know.
- Develops and recommends to the Superintendent a budget supporting his/her area of responsibility. Ensure that the recommended budget is prepared in accordance with budget development directives and is comprehensively detailed. Effectively manage the budget, including preparing and approving all purchase requisitions, in accordance with Board policies and regulations, and the directives of the School Business Administrator or his/her designee. Oversees Title Funds budget and expenditures.
- Reviews Professional Development Plans and assist evaluators with strategies to make the process effective in improving staff performance and the instruction provided to students.
- Coordinates the School Improvement Panel and District Evaluation Advisory Committee.
- Oversees the District’s mentoring program, including the mentoring plan, mentor/buddy training sessions, and assignment of mentors/buddies. Coordinates New Teacher Orientation and Induction Programs.
- Attends state and local workshops on teacher evaluation and assessment; disseminates that information district-wide.
- Maintains a positive, collaborative, and mutually supportive working relationship with community.
- Answers correspondence promptly.
- Serves on District, state, or community councils or committees as assigned or appropriate.
- Follows procedures for safe storage and integrity of all public and confidential school records, ensuring that personnel and student record keeping procedures comply with State and Federal law and District policy. Protects confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
- Observes strictly to avoid the appearance of conflict, all requirements of the School Ethics Act (N.J.S.A. 18A:12-21 et seq.) regarding conflicts of interest in employment, purchasing, and other decisions, including solicitation and acceptance of gifts and favors, and submit in a timely fashion the required annual disclosure statement regarding employment and financial interests.
- Adheres to New Jersey school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies, regulations and procedures, and contractual obligations.
- Monitors proposed revisions to state laws and regulations for his/her assigned area, and report to the Assistant Superintendent on the potential resultant impact of those revisions.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Academics, or Superintendent of Schools or designee, as otherwise not prohibited by law or regulation.
