$70,000 to $80,000 annuallyOverviewThe Air & Space Forces Aid Society (AFAS) is seeking a Financial Assistance Caseworker to provide direct support to Airmen, Guardians, and their families experiencing financial hardship. This role is responsible for delivering timely, accurate, and compassionate financial assistance, while exercising sound judgment and ensuring alignment with AFAS policy. This is a hybrid position based in Arlington, VA.About AFASAFAS is the official charity of the U.S.
Air Force and U.S. Space Force. Since 1942, we have provided emergency financial assistance, education support, and community programs to military families in need.
Our team of 32 supports families across more than 70 installations nationwide.ResponsibilitiesManage a high-volume caseload of financial assistance applicationsConduct thorough financial assessments, including income, expenses, and liabilitiesExercise independent judgment while balancing compassion, policy compliance, and organizational stewardshipDetermine appropriate assistance, including grants, loans, or a combination of bothApprove or deny assistance within delegated authority in accordance with policyEnsure all cases are accurate, fully documented, and audit-readyProvide financial guidance and connect clients to additional support resourcesCoordinate with partners including the American Red Cross, military leadership, and Military & Family Readiness CentersMaintain consistent communication with clients and stakeholders while protecting confidentialityParticipate in outreach and awareness efforts across military communitiesSupport after-hours and on-call coverage as part of a rotationQualificationsExperience in financial assistance, case management, counseling, or human services preferredStrong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with attention to detailAbility to exercise sound judgment and empathy in complex, high-impact situationsExperience managing high-volume, time-sensitive workloadsStrong written and verbal communication skillsProficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systemsUnderstanding of military culture and service member support environmentsAbility to manage sensitive personal and financial information with discretionBachelors degree in finance, social work, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience preferredDemonstrated professionalism, emotional maturity, and ability to manage difficult conversations constructivelyAbility to work effectively within structured policies, supervisory expectations, and compliance-driven environmentsAbility to maintain professionalism and sound judgment in emotionally charged or high-stress situationsWork EnvironmentHybrid schedule based in Arlington, VAOnsite Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-5 with remote work flexibility aligned to operational needsParticipation in after-hours and on-call rotation requiredThis role requires consistent professionalism, discretion, accountability, and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.Why This RoleThis role offers the opportunity to directly support Airmen, Guardians, and their families during critical moments.
