About the roleThis role will be based either in Surabaya, Chiangmai or Singapore, depending on candidate selected. Primary responsibility for all legal matters in Thailand, India, Indonesia, China, Vietnam and Singapore. The Regional Legal Counsel will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer of Pyxus International, Inc., with functional responsibility to Regional Director Asia.
The ideal candidate will play a key role in providing legal guidance and strategic support to our regional operations, ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations, and mitigating legal risks. The role will involve significant travel to the locations where the Company operates.
Key ResponsibilitiesLegal Compliance & Advisory•Advise on and ensure compliance with all applicable local, regional, and international laws and regulations in the Company’s Asia operations, including corporate law, labor law, tax and international trade laws.•Provide counsel on legal risks and assist in developing strategies to mitigate them.•Monitor legal developments in the region and proactively address potential implications for the Company.•Manage outside counsel and develop policies to manage and reduce legal expenses. Supervise and manage existing legal resources and staff in the region.
Corporate & Commercial Law•Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including supplier, customer and service agreements.•Support business units in contract negotiations and dispute resolution.•Oversee corporate governance matters, including compliance with corporate formalities for entities in the region.
Labor & Employment Law•Advise on labor law issues, including labor negotiations, employment disputes, and workplace policies in Thailand, India, Indonesia, China, Vietnam and Singapore.•Support the Regional Human Resources Department.
Litigation Management•Manage and oversee litigation, arbitrations, and regulatory proceedings in South America, coordinating with external counsel as necessary.
Commercial Transactions and Strategic Initiatives•Provide legal support for regional commercial transactions and strategic initiatives.•Partner with regional leadership and global leadership to advance the company’s strategic plan.
Cross-Functional Collaboration•Work closely with regional business leaders and the Global Legal Department to align legal strategies with business goals.•Act as a trusted legal advisor to senior management in South America.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B. or equivalent)Practicing lawyer
SkillsStrong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.Excellent organizational skills, detailed-oriented and able to complete projects and other assignments efficiently, timely and with minimum supervision.Superior written and verbal communication skills and analytical skills enabling timely and practical identification and communication of legal issues and risks.Exceptional interpersonal skills and able to interact with a wide range of stakeholdersPractical, proactive and results-oriented.Ability to multitask with a sense of urgency and ability to meet deadlines within a changing, fast‐paced environment.Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
Experiences5-10 years of relevant legal experience, with at least 3 years as in-house counsel, preferably in a multinational corporation.Expertise in corporate, commercial, labor, and regulatory law in China, Singapore, Thailand or Indonesia.Experience managing cross-border legal issues.Significant corporate transactional experience.
