Senior Business Analyst - Data
GSquared Group
Job Description
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Technical Business Analyst to support our Data & Analytics organization. This person will work closely with business teams and data engineers, turning operational needs into clear, actionable requirements. The role requires someone who can sit with business users to understand how their processes work, investigate the underlying data using SQL, and convert those findings into well‑defined user stories that developers can execute on.
This position centers on data warehousing, reporting, and analytics initiatives. The team works with a Snowflake environment built on dimensional modeling, Power BI semantic layers and reports, SSRS outputs, and Azure Data Factory pipelines. Work is organized in Jira, and most requests begin as business‑authored documents that need deeper technical clarification before development begins.
Responsibilities
- Gather, clarify, and refine requirements for data, reporting, and integration initiatives.
- Break down features into structured Jira stories, identifying acceptance criteria, edge cases, and data considerations early.
- Investigate source systems with SQL to confirm feasibility, uncover data issues, and validate requirements.
- Use AI tools to accelerate analysis — exploring code paths, tracing report logic, and producing documentation and follow-ups efficiently.
- Maintain end‑to‑end traceability from initial requirement through final delivery.
- Support backlog refinement and sprint planning, providing real‑time clarification on business intent.
- Define UAT scenarios, coordinate testing with business users, and ensure issues are resolved before release.
- Document processes, data definitions, and reporting logic to reduce reliance on tribal knowledge.
- Partner with QA to ensure appropriate test coverage for data‑driven changes.
- Communicate progress, risks, and open questions clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Qualifications
- 7+ years as a Business Analyst or Technical BA in software or data‑focused teams.
- At least 3 years working directly with data platforms, BI/reporting systems, or analytics environments.
- Daily experience using AI tools — Microsoft Copilot for workflow optimization and GitHub Copilot/Claude (or similar) for technical analysis.
- Strong SQL skills, including joins, aggregations, and profiling unfamiliar datasets.
- Proven ability to write user stories and acceptance criteria in an Agile environment.
- Experience coordinating UAT and driving business sign‑off.
- Ability to interpret data models and understand how changes affect downstream components.
- Excellent communication skills across both business and engineering audiences.
Required Skills
- Background in financial services, foundations, or nonprofit/philanthropy.
- Familiarity with Snowflake or Azure Data Factory.
- Exposure to Power BI or SSRS reporting.
- Understanding of REST APIs and tools like Postman or Swagger.
- Experience with GitHub workflows (issues, pull requests, reviewing schema changes).
- Knowledge of dimensional modeling concepts (facts, dimensions).
