Job Description
Staff Accountant (Real Estate) Position Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join a dynamic, growing team within the real estate sector. In this role, you will play a critical part in day-to-day financial operations, property accounting, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate possesses a strong foundational knowledge of accounting principles and must have direct experience in the real estate or property management industry to seamlessly transition into our workflows.
Key Responsibilities Property Accounting: Manage day-to-day accounting operations for a portfolio of properties, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and bank reconciliations. Financial Reporting: Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP. Accounts Receivable & Payable: Oversee tenant billing, rent collections, vendor payments, and expense tracking related to property operations.
Lease Administration support: Review lease agreements to ensure accurate financial setups, tracking of security deposits, and escalation clauses. Variance Analysis: Compare actual property performance against budgets and provide insightful variance analysis to management. Audit & Tax Prep: Assist with year-end audit preparation and compile financial data for tax reporting.
Qualifications & Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Experience: 2+ years of professional accounting experience, with mandatory experience in the real estate or property management industry. Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Excel (vlookups, pivot tables) and direct experience with real estate accounting software (e.g., Yardi, AppFolio, RealPage, or MRI) is highly preferred.
Knowledge: Strong understanding of GAAP, accrual-based accounting, and real estate-specific financial metrics. Attributes: Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to meet tight monthly closing deadlines. Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
