Under the supervision of the surgeon, The Surgical Tech First Assist (ST-FA) is a role whichprovidesadditionalassistance to the surgeon in the Operating Room over and above that normally provided. As defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), surgical assistants provide aid in exposure,hemostasis, closure, and other interoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safer operation withoptimalresults for the patient.In addition, the ST-FA may perform in the role of the Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room as needed.
Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and guiding principles.

This role goes beyond traditional surgical technologist responsibilities, contributing directly to patient safety, surgical efficiency, and optimal outcomes.You'll work side by side with surgeons and OR teams, serving as a trusted clinical partner throughout every procedure. What You'll Do In the Operating Room Assist surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical tasksFunction as a Surgical Technologist as neededAnticipate surgeon preferences and patient needs (sutures, specialty supplies, instrumentation)Ensure implants and specialized equipment are available and functioning properlyMonitor patient status and respond to potential complications Teamwork & Communication Serve as a vital clinical resource within the ORPromote a collaborative, respectful, team oriented environmentCommunicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and OR staffCoordinate workflow to support smooth, efficient surgical cases Commitment to Safety & Aseptic Excellence Maintain strict sterile field integrity and infection prevention standardsIdentify and communicate potential risks for surgical site infectionsPerform and model proper hand scrubs and OR attire complianceSafely handle, contain, and transport contaminated instruments and suppliesParticipate in point of use cleaning and contamination control Growth, Learning & Leadership Complete ongoing education to maintain competency and certificationAssist with onboarding and mentoring coworkers and studentsAttend hands on training and equipment in servicesParticipate in evaluating new products, procedures, and quality initiatives Scope Limitations For patient safety, this role does not include:Administering or injecting medications for local anesthesia or sedationInserting urinary catheters What We're Looking For Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED2+ years of full time scrub experience (routine and complex cases)Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology programAmerican Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)Ability to read, write, and speak EnglishAbility to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation Why Mercy?
