This position provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans accordinglyBuilds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteersConveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programsCompletes new staff orientation training as required, including blood borne pathogens and child abuse preventionMaintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduledFollows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessaryOrganizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipmentPerforms and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 preventionAssists in all areas and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisorRequirements:QUALIFICATIONS:Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.
If associate is Red Cross WSI certified he or she must crossover to YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor within 180 days of employmentCurrent ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one yearMust be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standardsAt least 16 years of ageENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniquesAbility to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds and to lift a small to average-sized childAbility to stand for long periods of timeMust be in good physical condition to teach classesMust have ability to work inside and outside (i.e. humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions)Must have ability to concentrate in a loud environmentYMCA COMPETENCIES (Leader):Critical Thinking & Decision MakingCommunication & InfluenceEmotional MaturityBACKGROUND CHECKS:An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position. Additional driver’s license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.
