Laboratory Operations & Facilities Engineer
Overview
We are seeking a proactive and adaptable Laboratory Operations & Facilities Engineer to join a growing team supporting the development and operational readiness of new laboratory facilities.
Working closely with the Facilities, Operations & EHS Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring laboratory environments are fully operational, compliant and prepared for future accreditation. This is a varied, hands-on position that spans laboratory operations, facilities coordination, documentation, quality systems, equipment readiness and project support.
Initially, you will support the delivery of two newly established laboratories as they progress towards ISO 13485 standards, before becoming involved in the development and commissioning of additional laboratories as the organisation continues to expand.
This role would suit someone with 3–5 years' experience in a regulated laboratory, medical device, pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment who enjoys working across multiple projects and is looking to broaden their experience across facilities, operations and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the day-to-day operational readiness of laboratory facilities, ensuring equipment, utilities and workspaces remain compliant and fully operational.
- Coordinate laboratory facilities activities including maintenance planning, calibration schedules and contractor management.
- Develop, review and maintain laboratory documentation including SOPs, operational procedures, maintenance records and controlled documentation.
- Support quality management activities including document control, change control, risk assessments, deviations and CAPA where required.
- Assist with equipment qualification, validation and commissioning activities as laboratories are brought into operation.
- Support environmental monitoring programmes and laboratory utility management.
- Work closely with Engineering, Quality, Facilities and EHS teams to ensure laboratories remain inspection-ready and compliant with internal quality standards.
- Assist with operational planning for new laboratory developments and facility expansion projects.
- Coordinate external suppliers and service providers to ensure maintenance and project activities are completed on schedule.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory operations, documentation and facility performance.
- Contribute to laboratory projects across multiple workstreams, providing flexible support as business priorities evolve.
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering, Life Sciences or a related technical discipline.
- Approximately 3–5 years' experience within a regulated laboratory, medical device, pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment.
- Experience supporting laboratory operations, facilities or engineering activities.
- Strong documentation skills with experience producing and maintaining controlled documentation.
- Familiarity with regulated quality systems including GMP, GLP and/or ISO 13485.
- Experience supporting equipment qualification, validation or commissioning activities would be advantageous.
- Understanding of laboratory maintenance, calibration and facilities management principles.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Experience supporting laboratory start-up or operational readiness projects.
- Exposure to laboratory facilities management or engineering projects.
- Experience working within an R&D environment.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring systems (e.g. Vaisala).
- Experience with contractor or supplier coordination.
- Familiarity with EHS processes within regulated environments.
