Mechanical Design Engineering Lead - Electrolyzer Systems
PrimeStaff Management Services
Job Description
A growth-stage climate infrastructure startup building and scaling electrolyzer systems for carbon removal and green hydrogen production. Having successfully deployed large-scale pilot systems, the company is now transitioning into commercial manufacturing and is establishing its production capability in India. The current phase focuses on industrialising electrolyzer hardware - driving design-for-manufacturing (DFM), cost reduction, supplier development, and scalable production of complex, multi-material electrochemical systems, with a strong focus on translating prototypes into manufacturable, scalable designs.
This is a hands-on engineering and manufacturing build-out environment, particularly relevant and suited for candidates with experience in electrolyzer manufacturing, fuel cells, hydrogen systems, or mechanical design of chemical/process equipment. Candidates from adjacent industries with strong design-for-manufacturing experience are also encouraged to apply.
Mechanical Design Engineering Lead - Electrolyzer SystemsBased in Mumbai
About the role This role focuses on leading designing and developing the physical hardware of next-generation electrolyzer systems, translating early-stage lab-scale prototypes into robust, scalable, and manufacturable products. You will work at the intersection of mechanical design and real-world deployment, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams - including chemical and electrochemical engineers - to bring complex systems from concept through to production. The position requires a hands-on, technically strong individual who can iterate rapidly, optimize designs for performance and cost, and operate effectively in a fast-paced, experimental environment with high levels of ambiguity.
Responsibilities: Lead the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies for advanced hardware systemsTranslate early-stage prototypes into scalable, functional, and manufacturable designsDevelop and refine prototypes through iterative design cycles, from proof-of-concept to production-ready solutionsOptimize designs for performance, manufacturability (DFM), ease of assembly, and cost efficiencyConduct testing using experimental and simulation methods to validate performance under various conditionsAnalyse test results and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system designPrepare detailed engineering documentation and specifications for manufacturing and productionWork closely with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure successful execution of designsContribute to the development of next-generation systems through continuous innovation and improvementAct as a foundational/pioneer engineering hire, helping establish engineering standards, design workflows, and technical best practices as the team scalesProvide technical guidance and mentorship to future engineers and cross-functional team members as the engineering function expands
Requirements: Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related fieldMinimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design of parts and assembliesExperience working with suppliers and manufacturers to bring designs into productionStrong knowledge of materials, including metals, polymers, and common alloysFamiliarity with a range of manufacturing and prototyping processesProficiency in CAD and CAM toolsStrong understanding of engineering fundamentals and mechanics of materialsAbility to operate hands-on in a fast-paced, iterative development environmentProactive, self-driven mindset with the ability to solve open-ended problems
Nice-to-haves: Demonstrated potential to grow into a technical leadership role within a scaling engineering organisationExperience designing parts for chemical processesExperience with power electronicsModelling experience (FEA, CFD)Passion for carbon management solutionsComfort with working in cross-functional teams across jurisdictions
