Our Rail Department has accumulated more than 30 years of experience designing conventional and high‑speed railway projects, and has developed value engineering and detailed design for more than 7,000 km of railway lines worldwide. IDOM's track experience includes +850 km of track design services and +300 km of track delivery‑partner / on‑site services, delivered in India, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Mexico, USA, Oman, Turkey, Algeria and more.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the Track / Permanent Way design, coordination and technical leadership for high‑speed, metro, LRT, commuter, conventional and freight rail projects.
- Develop and review track alignment design (horizontal and vertical geometry, cant, cant deficiency, transitions, gradients) in compliance with RDSO / IRS / Metro Rail standards.
- Design of ballasted and ballastless (slab) track systems, including rail sections (UIC 60 / 60E1 / 52 kg / 90R), fastening systems, sleepers, ballast profile, sub‑ballast and formation.
- Turnout and crossing design: layout of switches & crossings (S&C), thick‑web switches, swing‑nose crossings for HSR, and derailer/scotch block arrangements for depots.
- Special trackwork: expansion joints, glued insulated joints, check rails, guard rails, buffer stops, wheel stops and derailleurs.
- Depot and workshop track layout: stabling, inspection, washing, wheel‑lathe and heavy maintenance tracks; interfaces with workshop equipment.
- Track–structure interaction (TSI) on bridges, viaducts and tunnels; continuous welded rail (CWR) design, rail stress analysis, breathing zones and rail expansion.
- Noise and vibration mitigation: floating slab track, resilient fastenings, under‑sleeper pads, rail dampers.
- Coordinate track interfaces with civil (structures, drainage, formation), electrification (OCS/OHE, third rail, traction return), signalling (axle counters, point machines, IBJs), telecoms (cable routes) and RAMS.
- Prepare track construction methodology, tolerances, installation sequences and possession planning for greenfield and brownfield works.
- Ensure compliance with RDSO track manuals (IRPWM, IRTMM, LWR Manual, Manual for Ballastless Track), IRS‑T‑12, Metro Rail Manuals, EN 13803 / EN 13848 / EN 13674, UIC leaflets and applicable Indian regulations.
- Provide technical guidance during procurement, construction, T&C and commissioning, including track recording, geometry acceptance, tamping and stabilisation activities.
- Prepare and review technical specifications, BOQs, quantity take‑offs, data sheets and bid packages for P‑Way works.
- Review contractor submittals, RFIs and field change requests; ensure quality, schedule and budget compliance for the track discipline.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering (specialization or strong background in Railway / Track / Transportation Engineering).
- Chartered Engineer (IEI) or equivalent professional registration is highly desirable.
- 8+ years of experience dedicated to Track / Permanent Way engineering in rail/metro/HSR projects in India or internationally.
- Proven track record delivering alignment, plain track, S&C, CWR, depot layouts and track–structure interaction on at least one major rail project.
- Deep working knowledge of RDSO track codes and manuals (IRPWM, LWR Manual, Manual for Ballastless Track, IRS‑T‑12), Metro Rail Manuals and international standards (EN 13803 alignment, EN 13848 geometry quality, EN 13674 rail, UIC 703/518).
- Familiarity with BIM / Digital Twin environments for track (Bentley OpenRail Designer, ProjectWise, Revit interoperability).
- Proficiency with track design and analysis tools: Bentley OpenRail / MX Rail / Civil 3D, CARD/1, ProVI, and rail stress / TSI software.
- Knowledge of track measurement and recording systems (OMS, TRC) and geometry quality indices (SD, TQI) is a plus.
- Experience in HSR (≥ 250 km/h) track design and/or CBTC metro projects is highly valued.
- Strong communication and client‑facing skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural project teams.
- Flexible, proactive and solution‑oriented mindset.
