Job Summary
The Tool Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing tooling solutions for manufacturing processes, ensuring they meet functional requirements, quality standards, and cost targets. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in mechanical engineering, proficiency in CAD software, and experience with various manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Concept Development:
- Collaborate with engineers and production teams to understand the requirements for new tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and other devices.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions to develop innovative design concepts.
2. Design Creation:
- Utilize CAD software to create detailed blueprints and 3D models of the tools.
- Ensure designs meet industry standards and safety regulations.
3. Material Selection:
- Choose appropriate materials for tool construction based on the design specifications and intended use.
- Consider factors like durability, cost, and manufacturability.
4. Prototyping:
- Oversee the creation of prototypes to test the initial design.
- Work closely with machinists and production teams during the prototyping phase.
5. Testing and Validation:
- Conduct tests to validate the functionality and performance of the prototype tools.
- Identify any issues or areas for improvement through rigorous testing.
6. Design Modification:
- Make necessary modifications to the design based on test results and feedback.
- Ensure that the final design optimizes performance and meets all specifications.
7. Documentation:
- Prepare comprehensive documentation for the tool designs, including blueprints, technical specifications, and test results.
- Maintain detailed records of the design process and any modifications made.
8. Production Support:
- Provide ongoing support during the tool production phase to address any design-related issues.
- Collaborate with the production team to ensure the efficient manufacturing of the tools.
9. Continuous Improvement:
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tool design and manufacturing processes.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in tool design and manufacturing technologies.
10. Communication and Collaboration:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, machinists, and production staff.
- Communicate effectively to ensure that all stakeholders are aligned with the design goals and requirements.
11. Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all tools meet quality standards before release.
- Implement quality control measures and perform inspections as needed.
12. Cost Management:
- Monitor and manage the cost of tool production.
- Seek cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality and performance.
13. Project Management:
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion of design and production tasks.
- Prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines and production schedules.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Post Diploma in tool design
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or technical training in tool designing.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 4-6 years of experience in designing press tools, progressive tool, high speed stamping tools, stage tools, jigs, fixtures.
- Proven experience in tool design and development within a manufacturing environment.
- Skills and Competencies:

· Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for 2D and 3D modeling.
· Strong understanding of manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, casting, and machining.

· Ability to perform engineering calculations, simulations, and analysis related to tooling designs.
· Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot tooling-related issues during production.
· Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
