Job Overview The Labor Relations Manager directs and manages labor relations functions for the Michigan Department of Corrections. This hybrid position may allow up to 50% remote work; the selected candidate is expected to work a minimum of the first two weeks in the office to assist in learning the position. Responsibilities Respond to grievances and Unfair Labor Practice charges on behalf of the department, including conferences, hearings, arbitrations, and contractual issues.
Meet and confer with members of exclusive and limited recognition organizations. Attend department‑level labor/management meetings and health and safety meetings. Oversee secondary contract negotiations for all bargaining units or designate appropriate staff.
Represent or delegate the Department of Corrections in primary negotiations. Oversee drug and alcohol testing for the Department. Education Bachelor's degree in any major.
Experience Four years of professional experience, including either two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level. Alternative qualifications may include completion of high school and two years of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 14 level; or one year of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 15 level. Other Requirements Certain positions may require a criminal history background check.
The Department of Corrections may screen out applicants convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed. Applicants must report any possible conflict of interest as part of the ethical standards requirement.
