Trade Compliance Specialist, Business Intelligence Reference #36549 Waterdown, Ontario About the Role The Trade Compliance Specialist will be a part of the WESCAM Trade Compliance team supporting trade compliance process analytics to help align strategic goals into actionable plans. The role communicates with internal and external stakeholders to explain and interpret operational processes, practices, and procedures. It recommends enhancements to systems and processes, and works to achieve operational targets for specific programs and projects.
The specialist provides process, data analytics and technical expertise to ensure all trade compliance related interactions meet regulatory, corporate, and local compliance requirements. Responsibilities include data analysis, reporting, process improvements, training sessions for employees, and development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal regulations. The specialist conducts internal control audits and supports external audits and inquiries from U.S. government agencies such as Customs, DoS, DoC, and Global Affairs Canada through data gathering and corrective action.
Primary Responsibilities Develop, maintain, and optimize BI dashboards and reports to monitor trade compliance metrics and activities. Analyze large datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and potential compliance risks. Partner with trade compliance professionals to translate regulatory requirements into measurable indicators and automated reporting.
Support risk assessments, audits, and investigations with data-driven insights. Design and implement data models to track tariff mitigation, export license usage, internal controls, and monitoring. Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and availability for compliance reporting purposes.
Provide actionable recommendations to enhance compliance processes and reduce regulatory risk. Collaborate cross‑functionally with IT, Legal, Supply Chain, and Business Units on compliance‑related projects. Provide data-driven insights to leadership on compliance trends and operational risks.
Partner with IT and other business functions to automate processes, reduce manual errors, and ensure regulatory alignment. Identify data quality issues and recommend remediation strategies while training stakeholders on data accuracy and compliance implications. Support L3Harris E3 - Continuous Improvement initiatives, such as developing and updating business processes, training materials, reports, and ERP improvement projects.
Assist with trade compliance investigations, risk mitigation, audits and self‑assessments by maintaining accurate compliance records to support regulatory requirements. Required Capabilities Kept keen attention to detail; ability to learn and comprehend detailed laws and regulations. Ability to translate complex regulations into data-driven processes.
Proficiency in Power BI, MES, ERP‑LN, Team Center, SharePoint, PowerPoint, or other data sources and reporting applications. Very good analytical skills when working with large amounts of data. Excellent written and oral communication skills at a professional level.
Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, negotiation, and organizational skills. Effective task management with prioritization to meet deadlines. Capacity to work efficiently under pressure and tight deadlines.
Passion for continuous improvement and education. Ability to build strong relationships with people at all levels. Perform duties with minimum supervision and participate in cross‑functional projects as assigned.
Proactive problem solver, action and results oriented, and willing to see initiatives through to completion. Knowledge of L3Harris products and export control status is an asset. Solid proficiency with Fabric (Power BI) and SQL.
Solid understanding of data modeling and database structures. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data into actionable insights. Excellent communication skills to present findings to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
High attention to detail, integrity, and ability to work with sensitive information. Knowledge and experience with regulations including Canada’s Export & Import Permits Act (EIPA), Canada’s Controlled Goods Program (CGP), International Traffic and Arms Regulations (ITAR), and Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Desired Education and Experiences Proficient knowledge of the job area.
May have practical knowledge of project management. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Data Analytics or Information Systems. Minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience.
