About the Role
The Assistant Librarian will support the effective management and delivery of library and information services, ensuring seamless access to print and digital resources for students, faculty, researchers, and staff. The role requires a proactive professional with expertise in library operations, digital resource management, user engagement, and technology-enabled library services.
Responsibilities
Library Operations
- Assist in the day-to-day administration and functioning of the University Library.
- Manage circulation activities, including issue, return, renewal, reservations, and overdue records.
- Organize and maintain print and digital collections in accordance with established library standards.
- Perform cataloguing, classification, accessioning, and indexing of library resources.
Digital Resource Management
- Support the management of e-books, e-journals, databases, institutional repositories, and digital learning resources.
- Maintain and update the Library Management System (LMS) and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).
- Assist users in accessing digital resources and online research tools.
- Coordinate subscriptions and usage monitoring of electronic databases and learning platforms.
User Services
- Guide students and faculty in locating academic resources and conducting research.
- Conduct library orientation programmes for new students and faculty members.
- Promote information literacy and digital research skills through workshops and training sessions.
- Provide reference and research support across all academic disciplines.
Collection Development & Administration
- Assist in the procurement and processing of books, journals, and electronic resources.
- Coordinate stock verification, weeding, and annual library inventory.
- Maintain accurate library records, statistics, and reports.
- Ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory library standards.
Collaboration & Engagement
- Work closely with faculty to identify and acquire relevant learning resources.
- Support academic events, research initiatives, and knowledge-sharing activities.
- Promote a culture of reading, innovation, and lifelong learning within the University.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc.).
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc) from a recognized university.
- NET/SET qualification is desirable.
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in a university, academic, or research library.
- Fresh candidates with exceptional academic credentials may also be considered.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Library Management Systems (Koha, SOUL, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of DDC, AACR2/RDA, MARC21, and metadata standards.
- Familiarity with digital repositories (DSpace or similar), OPAC, and institutional repositories.
- Experience with online academic databases such as IEEE, JSTOR, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCO, ProQuest, and DELNET is preferred.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital productivity tools.
