Job Description
Position summary
Reporting to the senior accountant, the financial analyst supports financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis in accordance with the Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and supports financial planning and reporting functions through the application of strong analytical and critical-thinking skills. This role is responsible for completing assigned periodic supporting schedules and assisting with financial reporting, modelling, and scenario analysis. The financial analyst is expected to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Duties and responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to the following: Financial planning and reporting
Assists in budget planning and forecasting activities Prepares periodic reporting and forecasting, including variance analysis Prepares monthly cost allocations across departments, programs, and projects using prescribed metrics Liaises with the departments to support budget planning Supports salaries and benefits forecasting and analysis Liaises with other regulatory bodies required for benchmarking of licence fees, contractor rates and other relevant data for budgeting and planning General accounting and administrative support
Performs ad hoc reporting and other analytical requirements at the organization, department, and program/project level Provides backup support for other finance functions as required Decision-making
Decision making is reserved for the supervisor, manager, controller, or department head, depending on the significance of deliverables. Accountability
Accuracy, timeliness, and relevance of deliverables. Consequence of error/judgment
Deliverables are subject to review by a supervisor, manager, controller, or department head, which helps mitigate errors. Skills and qualifications
Required skills and qualifications include: Completed at least three of the six core and elective modules under the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP), or an equivalent program, preferably with a focus on financial reporting, management accounting, and finance Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field is an asset Minimum of three years or more of progressive accounting experience, preferably in financial reporting, analysis, budgeting, and forecasting—public sector accounting experience is preferred but not required Proficiency in Microsoft 365, with a strong working knowledge of Excel Working knowledge of ERP applications (i.e. Microsoft Business Central, Dynamics NAV, or similar) Ability to handle confidential information with a high level of integrity and professionalism Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy, particularly when working under pressure Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, team-oriented approach and a positive attitude exemplified by patience and a willingness to learn The compensation range for this position is $60,689 to $75,861 per year.
