IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY Interim Director of Human Resources Duration: 6 Months (possibility of permanent) Reports: CHRO Location: Canada (Hybrid) A leading global mining organization is seeking an experienced and strategic Interim Director of Human Resources to join its senior leadership team on interim basis. Reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer, this role will provide critical leadership across people strategy, organizational effectiveness, and HR operations during a period of operational scaling and transformation. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening HR infrastructure, enhancing workforce capability, and embedding a high-performance, safety-driven culture across the organization.
Key Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership Partner closely with the CHRO and executive leadership to shape and execute the organization’s people strategy. Provide strategic insight on workforce planning, organizational design, and HR transformation initiatives. Contribute to enterprise-wide decision-making as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.
Organizational Design & Workforce Planning Lead the development of a fit-for-purpose organizational structure aligned with project and operational requirements. Establish workforce plans, including headcount forecasting, budgeting, and capability development. Ensure clarity of roles, responsibilities, and reporting structures across the organization.
HR Systems, Governance & Infrastructure Develop and implement comprehensive HR frameworks, policies, and procedures to support both project and operational phases. Oversee the rollout and optimization of HRIS and payroll systems to embed consistent processes and reporting capabilities. Ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and global organizational standards.
Employment Framework & Employee Relations Establish a legally compliant and effective employment framework, including contracts, policies, and working conditions. Build robust employee relations systems, including mechanisms for consultation, communication, and issue resolution. Lead or support complex employee relations matters, investigations, and risk mitigation initiatives.
Compensation, Benefits & HR Operations Design and oversee competitive compensation and benefits programs aligned with market practices and organizational goals. Ensure effective HR operations including payroll, reporting, and employee lifecycle management. Implement data-driven HR reporting and analytics to support decision-making.
Talent Management & Workforce Development Lead recruitment, talent management, and succession planning initiatives to support workforce ramp-up. Drive capability-building strategies, including development and progression of local talent. Support long-term workforce planning, including localization strategies and transition of expatriate roles.
Culture, Safety & Leadership Champion a strong, safety-first culture with a focus on accountability, integrity, and continuous improvement Foster an inclusive, high-performance work environment that values collaboration and engagement. Embed leadership behaviors aligned with organizational values and operational excellence. HR Team Leadership Lead, mentor, and develop the HR team to deliver high-quality, responsive HR services.
Provide coaching and guidance to leaders across the organization on HR matters. Drive a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement within the HR function. Candidate Profile: Experience & Expertise Significant senior HR leadership experience, ideally within mining, energy, heavy industry, or similarly complex environments.
Proven track record in building or transforming HR functions within project-based or high-growth settings. Strong expertise in organizational design, HR systems implementation, and employee relations. Experience operating in multi-cultural and geographically dispersed environments strongly preferred.
Bilingual French a definite asset Leadership & Personal Attributes Strategic thinker with strong execution capability. Ability to operate effectively in dynamic, fast-paced environments. Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills at the executive level.
