Role Overview We are seeking two experienced Senior Backend Software Engineers to join a technology team delivering secure, scalable, and high-performance digital solutions within the public transport and mobility sector.

The successful candidates will play a key role in the design, development, integration, and deployment of modern backend platforms, working with cloud-native architectures, microservices, APIs, and secure application technologies. This role is suited to senior engineers with strong Python development experience, a solid understanding of distributed systems, and proven experience delivering enterprise-grade software solutions from design through to production deployment. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable backend services and applications.

Build and maintain RESTful APIs and web services. Develop cloud-native solutions using serverless architectures such as AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure. Design and implement microservices-based architectures.

Develop backend applications using Python and modern Python web frameworks such as Django, Flask, or equivalent. Design, manage, and integrate NoSQL databases and unstructured data solutions. Implement secure user access management controls for web applications.

Develop responsive web applications and support full-stack delivery where required. Implement secure API authentication and authorisation mechanisms, including: OAuth2 OpenID Connect JWT Apply strong engineering practices around unit testing, debugging, code quality, and performance optimisation. Collaborate with architects, developers, testers, and business stakeholders throughout the software delivery lifecycle.

Contribute to system design, development, deployment, and continuous improvement activities. Use distributed version control systems such as Git or Mercurial for source code management. Participate in technical reviews, solution design discussions, and agile delivery processes.

Required Skills & Experience Bachelors degree (BSc) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience. Extensive backend software engineering experience with a strong focus on scalable application development. Strong experience developing RESTful web services and APIs.

Proven experience with backend development, with exposure to full-stack development desirable. Experience designing and implementing cloud-based serverless architectures, including platforms such as: AWS Lambda Google Cloud Platform Microsoft Azure Strong understanding of microservices-oriented architectures. Advanced Python development experience, including exposure to frameworks such as: Django Flask Webapp2 Similar Python web frameworks Experience creating and managing unstructured NoSQL databases.

Strong unit testing, troubleshooting, and debugging skills. Experience implementing application security controls, including user access management. Experience developing responsive web applications.

Strong knowledge of distributed version control systems including Git or Mercurial. Experience implementing modern authentication and authorisation protocols: OAuth2 OpenID Connect JWT Demonstrable experience delivering complete software implementations, including: Solution design Development Testing Deployment Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as: React Angular Vue Semantic UI Desirable Attributes Experience working on large-scale digital platforms or public sector technology programmes. Strong understanding of secure software engineering practices.

Experience working within agile delivery environments. Ability to design solutions independently and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on delivering reliable, maintainable software.
