BUSINESS UNIT DESCRIPTION: The Enterprise Technology team at CIBC designs and manages data platforms to support business intelligence and analytics. They ensure secure, reliable storage and accessibility of enterprise-wide data assets. The team implements data governance, quality, and compliance standards, enabling data-driven decision making across the organization through innovative solutions.
JOB PURPOSE: The Senior Manager, Application Development for Global Operations Workbench Technology, you will lead a high-impact, fast-paced development team to build and deliver mission-critical applications supporting multiple business partners and major client groups. You will: Successfully deliver complex, enterprise-scale projects involving multiple front-end and back-end systems. Oversee project delivery, ensuring adherence to standards, operating procedures, and compliance requirements.
Build and maintain strong relationships with Application Development (AD) partners, business teams, and vendors. Champion DevOps practices and implement continuous automated deployments. Manage your department budget and resource in alignment with project deliverables.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Requirements Analysis: Track, analyze, and translate business requirements into effective technical solutions. Lead the team to deliver flawless systems and support troubleshooting of code and production issues. Technical Leadership: Provide hands-on support for complex incident management, lead incident bridges, and ensure timely resolution of technical issues.
Drive the adoption of DevOps concepts with a focus on automation and continuous improvement. Relationship Management: Collaborate closely with clients, business partners, and vendors to develop, test, plan, and implement application solutions. Advise application owners on technology possibilities and requirements.
Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimization and modernization, recommending and implementing appropriate solutions. Expectation and Escalation Management: Proactively manage stakeholder expectations by providing clear, timely communication on project progress, risks, and deliverables. Lead escalation processes with a solutions-oriented approach, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently and transparently.
People Leadership: Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing, diverse team. Motivate and establish cross-training schedules, foster out-of-the-box thinking, and support professional growth. Set appropriate context when assigning work to ensure that individuals roles support the achievement of the business units priorities and CIBCs overall goals.
Build team and individual capabilities by providing development opportunities such as job shadowing, special projects, and training. Manage performance by providing fair and accurate formal and informal feedback, identifying and removing obstacles to performance, and explaining how performance expectations align with business priorities. Create a positive work environment and be an effective role model by championing CIBCs mission, vision, and values.
Ensure compliance with policies, standards, guidelines, and controls by applying the policies and controls fairly and consistently so employees understand what to expect. Hire the right people in the right jobs to align individual capabilities with job requirements and business unit goals. CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Collaborates with peers both inside and outside the work unit to identify, discuss, and resolve business issues related to application development and delivery.
Interacts regularly with clients, business partners, and technology teams for the purpose of negotiating, managing, and delivering services to agreed standards. Works closely with external vendors when establishing and monitoring service level agreements and defining service requirements. AUTHORITIES/DECISION RIGHTS: As a key contributor to the business unit, this job has the authority to recommend changes to business processes in order to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. As a manager of people, this job has the authority to assign tasks to employees within their span of control, select individuals for hire, assess individual performance, make employee compensation decisions, and take disciplinary measures up to and including termination.
JOB DIMENSIONS: Manages multiple development projects and teams within a major line of business. Responsible for resource allocation, quality assurance, and delivery of application programs across the organization. Directly oversees a team of developers, BSA, Support team and coordinates with cross-functional business and technology partners.
Provides advisory and support services to contribute to the achievement of business improvement initiatives. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Tech or related field Must have skills: 10+ years of experience in application development, with 3+ years people management experience, including: Java/J2EE and cloud application development WebLogic, Cloud platform(e.g. Azure), Solaris, RHEL.
Oracle / PLSQL, IBM MQ or other messaging platform, ETL (Informatica / Databricks) DevOps tools (Maven, Jenkins, Artifactory, GitHub) ServiceNow for demand and change management Proven experience managing complex, enterprise-scale projects and production environments. Excellent technical and business communication skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and present to senior management. Experience with Waterfall & Agile methodologies.
Good to have skills: Experience working at onsite at client location. Experience working in financial or banking vertical. Experience in leading technology support teams, and mentoring them to strengthen resiliency, incident management (infrastructure or application), problem management, change management, and disaster recovery testing.
Must demonstrate end-to-end accountability for handling escalations from business, operations, and executive stakeholders. Leadership experience in digital transformation or modernization initiatives, and who have led or managed technology transformation initiatives in the past. Familiarity with infrastructure components (network, compute, storage, Oracle database).
WORKING CONDITIONS: This role operates within a normal office environment with little exposure to adverse working conditions.
